Delivery is a flat fee per load, typically $60 to $150, not a per-ton charge. This matters more than people expect: ordering 13 tons when a truck carries 12 means paying two full haul fees.

Bulk versus bagged

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, which is 54 bags at the standard 0.5 cubic foot size. At $6.50 a bag that is $351 per cubic yard — against roughly $45 to $95 delivered in bulk.

What moves the price

Haul distance. The dominant factor. Aggregate is cheap and heavy, so freight is most of what you pay beyond the quarry gate.
Local geology. Limestone is cheap in limestone country and expensive where it must be imported. Buy what is quarried nearby.
Season. Spring and early summer are peak demand. Winter ordering is often cheaper if you can store it.
Order size. Full loads always beat partial ones because of the flat haul fee.
Washing and screening. Washed and uniformly graded stone costs more than run-of-crusher material.

How to spend less

Size your order to fill full truck loads.
Use whatever stone the nearest quarry produces.
Collect small quantities yourself — but check your payload with the weight calculator first.
Do the spreading yourself; labor is often half a contractor's quote.
