How Deep Should Gravel Be?

    Published September 6, 2026 · 7 min read

Depth is the number that decides whether a gravel project works or fails. Get the area wrong by 10% and you order a bit extra. Get the depth wrong and the driveway ruts, the pavers sink, or the drain clogs.

The rule underneath all of it: depth is set by load, not by looks. A decorative bed that nobody walks on needs two inches. A pad carrying an RV needs ten.

    Depth by application

The gravel depth calculator applies these automatically, and will also tell you how deep the stone you already have will actually spread across your area.

    Why "one thick layer" fails

This is the mistake that ruins more DIY driveways than any other. A plate compactor transmits force only a few inches down. Dump ten inches of stone and run a compactor over it and you get a firm crust over a loose, unconsolidated mass. It looks finished. It ruts the first wet week.

Build in lifts of no more than four inches, and compact each one before the next goes down. Two-inch lifts are better still. It is slower, and it is the difference between a driveway that lasts three years and one that lasts fifteen.

    Order depth versus finished depth

Gravel settles. Angular stone loses volume as it locks together, and some always works into the subgrade on the first pass. If you order exactly the finished depth, you will come up short.

    • Firm subgrade: add 10%
    • Soft or wet clay: add 15%
    • Very soft ground: add 20% and consider a geogrid

Every calculator on this site has this allowance built in as a selectable field, defaulting to the standard 10%.

    Can gravel be too deep?

On a walking surface, absolutely. Loose stone deeper than about three inches behaves like sand — your foot sinks, chairs tip, and wheelbarrows bog down. If you want a firm surface, the answer is more compacted base and a thin surface course, not a thicker layer of loose stone.

The exception is playground surfacing, where depth is the safety mechanism. Nine inches of pea gravel is a published standard for fall heights up to about five feet, and it is meant to be loose.

Depth and stone size go together

A useful rule for decorative stone: the layer should be at least twice the diameter of the largest stone. Two-inch river rock at two inches deep is a single layer of rock with fabric showing between the gaps.

    Stone sizeMinimum depth
    3/8" (pea gravel, #8)2"
    3/4" (#57)2"
    1"–2" river rock3"
    2"–4" rock4"
    4"–8" cobble6"

The river rock calculator enforces these minimums and warns you when the depth you entered will leave fabric visible.

    Working out the volume

Once you have the depth, the arithmetic is simple: area in square feet, times depth in feet, divided by 27 for cubic yards. Or skip it and use the gravel calculator, which handles the waste allowance and the tonnage conversion at the same time.

    Frequently asked questions

    How deep should gravel be?

Two inches for decorative beds, two to three inches for walkways, four to six inches for patio and shed bases, and eight to twelve inches for a new driveway built in compacted layers.

    Can gravel be too deep?

On a walking surface, yes. More than about three inches of loose stone is unpleasant and unstable underfoot. Depth belongs in the compacted base, not the surface course.

How thick should each compacted layer be?

No more than four inches per lift, and two inches is better. A plate compactor physically cannot densify a deeper layer all the way through.

How deep should gravel be for drainage?

A French drain trench is typically 18 to 24 inches deep with 12 to 18 inches of washed stone, capped with soil or left exposed.
