Match the edging to the stone
The lighter and rounder your gravel, the more the edging has to do. Pea gravel exerts constant outward pressure and will find any weakness. Compacted crusher run largely holds itself.

Depth is the thing people get wrong
Edging must be at least as deep as the gravel layer, and ideally an inch or two deeper. A 4-inch edging strip around 6 inches of stone does nothing — the gravel simply flows underneath it.
- 2" of decorative gravel → 4" edging
- 3" patio surface → 5" edging
- 6"+ driveway → steel edging or a timber border, set deep
Installation notes
- Set edging before the surface stone goes in, but after the base is compacted.
- Leave the top edge flush with or just below finished grade — proud metal edging is a genuine trip and mower hazard.
- Stake at the manufacturer spacing, usually every 2 to 3 feet, and more tightly on curves.
- Overlap section joints rather than butting them, or gravel escapes at every seam.
- On curves, use aluminum or thin steel — timber will not bend and plastic kinks.

Do I need edging around gravel?
For pea gravel and river rock, absolutely — rounded stone will not stay put. Compacted crushed stone holds better but still spreads at the edges over time.
How deep should landscape edging be?
It should extend at least as deep as your gravel layer, and preferably an inch or two deeper. Edging shallower than the stone simply gets undermined.
What is the best edging for a gravel driveway?
Steel edging or a timber border. Plastic edging heaves in freeze-thaw and is not rigid enough to resist a vehicle tire riding over it.
