Measuring the area

100 ft tape measure

A long open-reel tape is the right tool for driveways and large areas. A 25 ft pocket tape used in stages accumulates error quickly across a 60 ft run.

Measuring wheel

The fastest way to measure a long or curved driveway, and the only practical way to follow a centreline around a bend. Worth it above about 100 feet.

For widths, depths, and spot-checking as you spread. You will use this more than the long tape.

Setting grade and level

String line and stakes

The cheapest and still one of the most useful layout systems there is. Mason line between stakes gives you a straight edge and a datum to measure depth from.

Grade stakes

Mark them at your target depth, drive them into the compacted base, spread to the marks, and pull them as you finish. This is how you actually hit a consistent depth rather than guessing.

4 ft level

For shed pads, patio bases, and checking your crown. A 4-foot span catches dips a shorter level misses.

Laser level

For a driveway crown, a long pad, or anything where you need a consistent slope over distance. Rotary lasers with an outdoor receiver work in daylight; cheap indoor line lasers do not.

Measuring depth as you go

This is where quantities drift. A driveway spread one inch deeper than planned across 720 square feet uses an extra 2.2 tons — most of a wheelbarrow-hour and a chunk of a delivery.

• Set grade stakes before spreading, not after.
• Check depth every few feet, not just at the ends.
• Remember the target is the compacted depth — spread slightly proud.
