Landscape fabric does two very different jobs. Under a driveway or parking pad it is a separator: it stops the stone being pushed down into the soil, so the base keeps its thickness. Under a path or bed it is a weed barrier. Around a French drain it is a filter that lets water through while keeping silt out. Each job wants a different fabric.

How many rolls and staples you need
Fabric is bought in strips of a fixed width, so the count depends on how many strips fit across the area once seams overlap. The landscape fabric calculator does that; the examples use the same function.
Worked example: A 40 × 4 ft path on 3 ft rolls, and a 60 × 10 ft driveway on 12 ft rolls
- Path: 2 × 40 ft strips → 1 roll, about 83 staples
- Driveway: 1 × 60 ft → 1 roll, about 87 staples
- Seams overlap 6 in; staples every 3 ft along seams and edges
Path: 1 roll. Driveway: 1 roll of 12 ft woven fabric (1 × 60 ft) — a roll wider than the driveway means no seams under the wheels.

What to look for on the listing
- Woven or non-woven — the single most important choice. Listings sometimes blur the two, so read the photos and specifications.
- Weight or thickness: non-woven is sold by ounces per square yard; 4–6 oz suits most home drains.
- Tensile or grab strength for driveway fabric.
- Roll width: a width that matches your driveway avoids seams.
- UV rating if the fabric will sit exposed for a while before stone goes on.
