Polymeric sand is fine sand mixed with a binder that sets when wetted. It locks pavers together and resists weeds and ants far better than plain sand — but only when the product matches the joint width and it is installed in dry weather. Most failures are the wrong product for the joint or too much water.

How many bags you need
Coverage depends on the joint width and depth, and on paver size — small pavers have far more joint length per square foot. The polymeric sand calculator works it out; the examples use the same function.
Worked example: 200 sq ft of patio, two layouts
- 4 × 8 in brick pavers with 1/4 in joints: 8 bags (50 lb) — about 28 sq ft per bag
- 16 × 16 in slabs with 1 in joints: 11 bags (50 lb) — about 21 sq ft per bag
8 bags (50 lb) for the brick pavers and 11 bags (50 lb) for the wide-joint slabs — wide joints use sand much faster, and need a product rated for them.

What to look for on the bag
- Joint width range — standard sands often cover about 1/8 to 1 in, wide-joint products up to several inches.
- Minimum joint depth; most need the sand at least 1 in deep to hold.
- Rain-free time after activation, often 12–24 hours, and the temperature range.
- Colour — grey, tan and charcoal change the look of the patio.
- Traffic rating if the pavers are a driveway.
Avoiding haze and wash-out
- Start with pavers completely dry, so sand flows to the bottom of the joints.
- Sweep, compact (a plate compactor with a pad vibrates it down), and sweep again until joints are full to just below the chamfer.
- Blow every grain off the surface before wetting — this is what prevents haze.
- Wet with a gentle shower setting in stages as the label says; flooding washes the polymer out.

What is the best polymeric sand for wide joints?
A product specifically rated for wide joints or flagstone — standard polymeric sand is usually rated only to about 1 inch and can crack or wash out in wider gaps.
How many bags of polymeric sand do I need?
It depends on joint width, depth and paver size. Narrow joints on large pavers need little; wide joints on small pavers need a lot. Our polymeric sand calculator works it out for your patio.
Why is there haze on my pavers after polymeric sand?
Sand or dust left on the surface when it was wetted. Blow the surface completely clean before wetting; if haze has formed, use a haze remover made for your paver type.
Can polymeric sand go on wet pavers?
No. The pavers and joints should be dry so sand fills the full joint depth and does not start setting on the surface.
How long does polymeric sand last?
Often several years to a decade, depending on traffic, drainage and installation. Topping up joints and sealing extends its life.
