How much stone you will move

Worked example: A 20 × 12 ft pea gravel patio, 3 in deep
- Gravel needed (with waste allowance): 2.44 yd³
- Weight: 3.3 tons
- At about 3 cu ft per trip (a half-full 6 cu ft barrow — gravel is heavy): about 22 trips

How to spread gravel evenly
- Dump loads in small piles across the area rather than one big pile.
- Pull stone with the tines, then flip the rake and smooth with the flat back.
- Check depth with a marked stake as you go.
- Compact driveway and patio layers before the next — see the plate compactor guide.
- On driveways, crown the centre slightly so water runs off to the sides.
What to look for on the listing
- Head width — 30–36 in for open areas, narrower for paths.
- Head material — aluminium for levelling, forged steel for pulling heavy stone.
- Handle length and material; fibreglass does not rot or splinter.
