How much material you will compact
A driveway is built in layers, and each one is compacted before the next goes down. The gravel driveway calculator sizes the layers; the example uses the same function.
Worked example: A 60 × 12 ft new driveway, three layers
- Driveway area: 720 sq ft
- Total gravel: 38.13 tons (26.89 yd³)
- Three layers (base, middle, top), each compacted in lifts of about 3–4 in
38.13 tons of stone over 720 sq ft — several passes per lift. That is a job for a gas plate compactor; renting for a day or two is common.
